About our milk and dairy
Waitrose milk

What's special about Waitrose
milk & cream?

- At Waitrose we only source our milk from a pool of dedicated British farmers we know and trust.
- We always pay our dairy farmers a leading price that takes into account their costs of production so they have the confidence to invest in the future of their farms.
- The Waitrose milk pool is segregated, so the quality and traceability of all our fresh milk and cream can be guaranteed. We are the only supermarket to do this.

Working with our
dairy farmers

We believe it is important our farmers receive a fair price that gives them a sustainable return. We negotiate directly with an established group of farmers under a pioneering producer group system, taking the cost of production into account when agreeing a milk price. We always aim to pay a fair and leading price to farmers for our milk.

We pay this fair price because it gives farmers the reassurance and confidence to invest in their businesses. Farmers are the key to a thriving agricultural economy and it is important they receive a sustainable return for the top quality milk they provide.

We pledge that all cows producing milk for Waitrose will spend at least 100 days each year grazing in fields. This new pledge sets a minimum standard, strengthening our commitment to animal welfare and ensuring a level of consistency across our dairy farms.  We are the only retailer to make this pledge.

A day at a dairy farm

David Homer, who produces milk for Waitrose, shows you life on his farm in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside.

essential Waitrose milk

All essential Waitrose milk is produced by a group of dedicated farmers, who supply their milk exclusively for us and understand and share our values. We work closely with our farmers to deliver the highest standards of milk quality and ensure best practice in animal health and welfare, and can trace every pint back to the farm that produced it. As well as committing to continually adopt sustainable farming methods that will help safeguard the environment and encourage local wildlife to flourish on their farms, we have also committed that all the cows that produce essential Waitrose milk will spend a minimum of 100 days each year grazing in fields.

Our animal welfare commitments
Waitrose farmers are committed to the animal welfare principles known as the Five Freedoms. The Five Freedoms form the core of our animal welfare standards - freedom from hunger and thirst, discomfort and pain, injury and disease, freedom to express normal behaviour, and freedom from fear and distress.

Our dairy cows have access to grazing fresh grass in the fine weather and are sheltered in comfortable airy barns with plenty of room to lie and turn in comfort when the weather is inclement. The cows like to loaf about in groups and lie on fresh bedding - with lots of readily available food and water.

Our dairy farmers produce a comprehensive herd health plan in conjunction with their farm vet. This is continually monitored to ensure that the dairy cows are kept healthy and happy.
