Quick tips for living green:

  • Enjoy seasonal produce
  • Use a bag for life
  • Shop online
  • Don't overfill the kettle
  • Check your fridge temperature is between 1-5°C

Being kind to our environment needn’t be difficult, and it doesn't have to mean making drastic lifestyle changes. So, to find out  how you can “do more, with less”, we’ve teamed up with Start - a charitable initiative set up by HRH the Prince of Wales to inspire and enourage people to reduce their environmental impact by living more sustainably.

Tip 1: Be green and clean

As a way to help reduce the number of toxic chemcials that are fed back into our ecosystem, all of Waitrose’s own-label laundry products are fully biodegradeable and specially designed to work at 30C.

Meaning, you can keep your clothes fresh and clean without the need for harmful chemicals, and enabling you to reduce the amount of energy needed to wash them.

Tip 2: Try something new

Approximately 75% of the world’s fish stocks are already fully exploited or overfished. Lessen your impact by making sure the seafood you buy is sourced responsibly and try less popular species, such as pollack, dabs, sardines and sprats.

Waitrose is commited to ensuring that all our fish and shellfish is resonsibly sourced from well-managed wild fisheries or farms.

Tip 3: Greener bulbs

Why not switch to eco-friendly lightlbulbs? They're a great way to minimise your impact on the environment. Plus, since they use up to 80% less energy than standard bulbs, you could save on your energy bill.

Do your bit for the environment and you could save upto £25 a year. From September all bulbs sold at Waitrose will be low-energy, meaning you can also lower your carbon emissions.

Tip 4: Eat with the seasons

Eating food that’s in season can have a number of benefits. In-season produce is at the peak of it’s flavour and offers the greatest nutrient value.

Also, because it hasn’t been shipped in from other parts of the world, it’s also much better for our environment, which makes it more affordable, too.

Tip 5: Banish the bag

More than 12 million plastic bags are handed out in shops each year in the UK. Many are produced using non-renewable resources and can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Reuse your carrier bags or buy a Waitrose bag for life; they cost just 10p and are made from 100 percent recycled materials.

Return your old carrier bags in instore, or hand them to one of our drivers for recycling with your next home delivery.

Tip 6: Shop online

A donation from every Waitrose.com home delivery goes towards planting new trees in Britain. So far more than 35,000 trees have been planted, helping to absorb nearly 5,000 tonnes of CO2, and providing wildlife habitats for a wide range of species.

Tip 7: Buy British

Aim to buy British produce where possible. You’ll be supporting local producers and the British economy, and cutting down on food miles (the distance food has to travel from it’s source to your plate).

Tip 8: Stay loose

Choosing loose products or refills rather than pre-packed can be a great way to cut down on needlessly wasteful packaging. Plus, it's a great way to make a saving at the same time.

So, whether you’re looking to refill the fruit bowl or the coffee pot, reach for the package-free option to cut down on unneccessary waste.

Tip 9: Country code

Look for food with the LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) marque. It guarantees producers operate in a way that helps to protect natural landscapes and habitats.

Waitrose is the only retailer to insist that all of British fruit and vegetable growers adopt this standard.
