An Italian word, meaning starter or the equivalent of the French hors d'oeuvre. A platter of cold meats, olives, roasted vegetables, marinated cheeses, a selection of seafoods and slices of fresh fruit are just some of the typical ingredients that may be offered. A choice of breads with extra virgin olive oil for dipping may also be served.

A variety of prepacked fresh Italian-style antipasto are available from Waitrose including Marinated and Grilled Artichoke Hearts (tender artichoke hearts dressed with a parsley, garlic, red chilli and basil marinade), Marinated Anchovy Fillets (anchovy fillets in a parsley, garlic, lemon and orange marinade), Marinated and Grilled Red & Yellow Peppers (slices of grilled red and yellow peppers dressed in a parsley, garlic, red chilli and basil marinade), Marinated Paterno & Toscanelle Olives (green Sicilian Paterno olives and black Toscanelle olives in a parsley, garlic, chilli, basil and lemon marinade), Marinated Sun Dried Tomatoes (sun dried tomatoes and capers in a parsley, garlic and red chilli marinade) and Marinated & Grilled Aubergines (slices of grilled aubergines dressed in a parsley, garlic, red chilli and basil marinade).
