Wine and roses are often brought together on Valentine's Day, but the original pairing probably dates back to the ancient vineyards in France. Because roses and grape vines are prone to the same mildew and pests, a rose bush was often planted at the end of the rows of vines as an early indicator of disease.
Roses will show the symptoms earlier, thus indicating the right time to protect the vines. In modern times, the colour of the rose usually indicates the type of grape and not only do they make wonderful companion plants for the vines, they also bring a splash of colour and a hint of fragrance to the vineyard.
