A glorious legacy of 1930s Modernism, the De La Warr Pavilion has, since 1935, reclined like a sleek lion among the lesser beasts of Bexhill's fusty seafront. A wonderful place of light and airy open spaces, sweeping curves and clean lines, the pavilion is now an arts centre housing exhibitions, talks and performances, as well as a great café and restaurant.
Most of the food is local and organic, and it's pretty good too. I enjoy a parsnip soup with warming cinnamon (£3.50), the prelude to a cracking Sunday roast of pork (£13.50), featuring a chunky apple sauce and (unusually these days, I find) decent roast potatoes.
Fiona, meanwhile, starts with a richly indulgent croque monsieur (£5.50), which comes with a good salad and is big enough to constitute lunch in its own right. Undaunted, she presses on with a delicious grilled lemon sole (£13.50) and a side portion of rather wonderful chips (£2.50). After all, we are at the seaside.
