Campaign update - Save Our Bacon

British pig farmers are facing a bleak summer as feed prices continue to rise. The price of feed, which represents at least half the cost of rearing a pig, stood at around £200 per tonne in mid-March 2008, double the cost of summer 2007. “If feed prices keep rising, and farmers don’t get a fair price for their pigs, the British pig industry faces collapse,” says Jon Bullock from the British Pig Executive.

Save Our Bacon farmers turn pop stars

Move over Bob Dylan, there are new protest singers in town: the nation’s struggling pig farmers.

Sisters Kate and Vicky Morgan, and Fred Henley, whose stories were featured in the March issue of WFI, were among a group of farmers who swapped the sties for the studio to record ‘Stand by Your Ham’. The unlikely pop stars recorded the tweaked version of Tammy Wynette’s classic on behalf of the British Pig Executive, to raise awareness about the plight of farmers, who lose an average of £26 per pig they sell.
