We are what we wear as much as we are what we eat. William Sitwell asks nine leading British fashion designers to reveal their favourite culinary creations and explain the ingredients of their designs.
Ben De Lisi
"My look is laid back, discreet and nonchalant, with lots of colour - which is a bit like the food I cook. Basically I'm a savoury person - I love olives, tomatoes, basil, pine nuts. This torta was invented by my Gandma Bruno - it's one of those dishes that you can just throw together when your cupboard is a little bare"
Lulu Guiness
"Japanese cuisine is my lobster and my caviar. Healthy dishes such as good tempura or sushi are a real treat - and I just love their simplicity. Of course, with my business and two children, cooking is low on my list of priorities. I'm too busy with my handbags, which are a symbol of femininity and identity. They are decorative and funny - not at all for people who conform"
John Rocha
"These delicious prawns in sesame sauce are the kind of thing I like to cook - that is, when I get round to cooking, which is only about six times a year because a lot of my time is spent travelling. But when I'm at home in Dublin I cook mostly Oriental food for my friends. As for my clothes, they are organically modern, and are worn by everyone from Anna Friel to my doctor - people who understand fashion but aren't fashion victims"
Georgina Von Etzdorf
"My work is unique, beautiful, special, creative, marvellous. I'm inspired by the senses and my designs suit anyone - man, woman or beast. In fact pug dogs just love my bean bags. I eat a lot of quail's eggs. If you don't want to boil them, use my Spanish recipe. Fry the eggs and place them on a piece of serrano ham. Serve on bread rubbed with garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil"
Allegra Hicks
"Cooking is just like painting, and I love it - you just throw different ingredients together and create something. This Persian rice dish is something I serve at dinner parties.
The inspiration for my work is very varied but most of my ideas come to me when I travel and my eyes are free. A design idea might come from a jug at the V&A. There's something odd about the brain - an idea can sit there for two years and then suddenly pop out"
Emma Hope
"Crème brlée is the most delicious pudding in the world, but it mustn't be too deep as I don't like surprises. I don't want to dig in and find a raspberry down there. As for my shoes, the idea is to make them comfortable and desirable. I like things to look like someone does give a damn about them - and I just love shoes"
Paul Costelloe
"With seven children, trying to entertain at home is chaos.
So when I do cook, which is so infrequently, I'll just prepare fish, chicken or pasta. I particularly love oysters. Just squeeze some lemon over them and off you go, or try this simple soup. My food is easy like my clothes - loose sweaters, shirts and jeans. My designs are understated - for people who don't take themselves seriously"
Bill Amberg
"Cooking is a great diversion and I also grow salad leaves, pumpkins and beans in my garden. These fish balls are my flexible friend in the kitchen - the kids love them and they're easy to make. All you need is good, fresh ingredients. My products are simple, too. As with food, the key is to have the best raw materials"
Dinny Hall
"Cooking is my second favourite thing to jewellery design and I especially love cakes. This cake is a light variation on an essential theme. As long as you get the chemistry right, you can do great things. I cook in much the same way that I design, by taking a traditional image, and make it modern"
