Food seasonality podcast

What does the British season mean to you?

Listen to our studio discussion

Listen to our studio discussion hosted by William Sitwell on the pros and cons of shopping and cooking with the seasons. Is it really possible to produce great, delicious food all year by only cooking what’s in season? Or do we limit our palates and tastes by slavishly following the season when the produce available out of season and abroad make for a more varied and enjoyable diet?

  • Lovely programme yet again. We have lost passion for seaonal food and because we can get anything anytime it all tastes the same. I had my first asparagus from Lincolnshire this week and it was the best food I had eaten, you can't get that taste any other time of the year. It makes me really sad that our children and our children's children will not know the excitement of eating food fresh and in season. Huxley was right, in a Brave New World people just eat vitamin pills. Thats more or less what we will come to.

  • I'd always known local, seasonal food tasted better and recently thought more about the environmental aspects too. But, I had no idea it was nutritionally superior as well. Anyway, eating seasonally is just more interesting. Great programme by the way. This is beeb quality - not a thinly veiled promo for Waitrose. Fair play to Waitrose for covering the subject properly. More please.

  • It is good to see Waitrose raising the subject of British food but I would like you to go even further, if possible, and talk about local food. In Oxfordshire there are many local farms and I would positively like to contribute to the local economy by buying from them, if possible. It would be extremely helpful if you indicated the carbon cost of bringing food to the store. In my opinion you ship some produce, especially: fruit, vegetables and flowers too far to be environmentally sustainable.

  • Great podcast of seasonality. I think we should all try to learn more about our local seasonal produce - make 2+ of our 5-a-day 'local'.
