What are Waitrose healthier choices?

These are foods which have been carefully developed to help you make healthier food choices, in a really clear and simple way.

Easy to find, with a distinct black and white band on the front of the pack; these foods will be replacing our Perfectly Balanced range.

Waitrose healthier choices offer delicious healthier alternatives to your favourite foods, being either lower in fat, saturated fat, sugar or calories. You can choose from warming meals such as chicken korma to everyday ingredients such as cream and cheese.

All healthier choices have been developed with taste at the top of the agenda - we want you to enjoy making healthier choices!

Instead of giving these foods a "fancy name", we have decided to simply call them by the reason, as to why they are a healthier choice. This reason is clearly stated in black and white on the front of pack as shown below:

Reducing your saturated fat intake is an easy way to a healthier diet. Too much saturated fat in your diet can lead to raised cholesterol levels which can put you at greater risk of developing heart disease.

The guideline daily amount (GDA) for saturated fat is 20g for women and 30g for men. To help you stay within the guideline daily amount, try swapping your ordinary food purchase for a low saturated fat version. For example, try swapping your standard chicken tikka masala and rice for the low saturated fat version (clearly identified by a black and white band on the packaging) and you'll be eating 9.4g less saturated fat, that's 47% of your GDA for saturated fat, saved.

We all know we should be cutting back our fat intake as a way to a healthier diet. Too much fat in the diet can lead to obesity and the health problems associated with it. With 9 calories per gram of fat (more than twice that of carbohydrate and protein), it's easy to see why too much fat in the diet is linked with obesity. That said, fat is an essential part of a balanced diet and our bodies cannot function without it, but staying within the GDA for fat is the way to a healthy balanced diet. The GDA for fat is 70g for women and 95g for men.

Most people in the UK are eating too much sugar. A great way to cut down on your sugar consumption is to reduce the amount of foods you eat with added sugars. Sugar is found naturally in many foods, like fruit and milk, but it is not this sugar that you need to reduce in your diet, it's the added sugars in foods like sweets, cakes and fizzy drinks. You don't have to exclude these completely, just cut back a little. The GDA for sugar is 90g for women and 120g for men.

Cutting down on calories

Did you know that an extra 100 calories a day equates to approximately 9 lbs weight gain over a year? It's easy to see why the odd snack here and there can lead to an expanding waist line. Snacking does not need to be avoided though - a mid morning and mid afternoon snack can help keep your energy levels up - just be sure to watch the calorie content. Cutting back on the amount of calories you consume in a day should help you to maintain an ideal weight. The GDA for calories is 2000 for women and 2500 for men.
