All of the foods in this range are free from hydrogenated fat, artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners or added salt. Waitrose Wholesome offers a traditional way of healthy eating and with over 130 foods to chose from – there are endless ways to include them in your diet, from making marinades to just simply having a nibble on.

Dried fruit

Drying fruit actually concentrates the nutrients so they are great for providing energy and make an excellent snack and lunch box filler. Packed full of fibre, just two tablespoons of dried fruit counts towards your 'five a day'. Dried fruit also contributes a useful amount of iron to the diet.

Star product: Dried apricots are packed full of beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body) and have a low GI, which means they raise blood sugar levels slowly helping to keep your energy levels up and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Nuts

Nuts are an excellent provider of 'the good fats' - monounsaturated and polyunsaturated - which can help to lower cholesterol. Nuts are also a great source of fibre and protein and are packed full of minerals including iron and calcium, and also supply Vitamin E.

Star product: Just a handful of Brazil nuts a day will provide you with all the selenium your body needs.

Seeds

Packed full of nutrients, these 'superfoods' are an excellent source of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They also provide good fats which can help lower cholesterol.

Star product: Sunflower seeds are tasty and packed full of magnesium, phosphorous, selenium and vitamin E.

Beans and pulses

Beans and pulses are excellent fibre providers and are packed full of vitamins and minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium and folate. An 80g cooked serving counts towards your 'Five a day'.

Star product: Soya beans are packed with protein making them an excellent substitute for meat in a vegetarian diet. They also contain other useful amounts of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, folate and vitamin E. It is also thought that soya products can help to lower blood cholesterol and therefore may help to maintain a healthy heart.
