Family Chilli

Our kids love this one

  • Total time: approx 50 mins

Serves: 3

  • 15 ripe plum/ordinary tomatoes (or one can chopped tinned tomatoes).
    500g Mince
    21/2 tbsp Cumin Seeds
4 leaves Fresh Basil (or 2 tsp dry)
    2 Medium onions
    1 large paprika pepper
1 chilli pepper (or more as required)
    1 tsp Sweet paprika powder
    1 tablespoon groundnut oil
    2 Bay leaf
1 tin kidney beans (or Haricot)

  1. Half the tomatoes and place in a pan with 2 tbsp water (to stop them catching), bring to the boil then simmer for 15 mins. Pass the tomatoes through a sieve to extract the juice, discard skins etc. Return tomato 'juice' to the hob and reduce by one third. This can be done at any time prior and kept ready.
  2. Finely dice the onions, chilli, paprika pepper. Dry fry the mince to remove the excess fat and to brown it off. At the same time fry in oil until onion is translucent. Add cumin seeds and paprika powder and fry for one minut. Add tomato 'juice' from previous (or can of tomatoes), bring to the boil then add browned mince (minus fat)
  3. Add bay leaf/basil and simmer for 15 minutes. (Add boiled water as required to keep the sauce loose and thick) Add Kidney (or Haricot) beans and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat and serve immediately or let it rest and eat later. (The flavours enhance when left). Nice with crusty bread or on a baked potato.
