Store plums at room temperature and use within four days of purchase.
Add a few plum stones when stewing the fruit for a subtle almond flavour.
To halve plums, cut along the indentation in the flesh, twist the halves apart and remove stones with the tip of a knife.
Plums are excellent eaten fresh, but cooking can intensify their flavour. Try them in pies, crumbles and tarts, stewed, baked or added to rich meat stews to give a little sweetness.
