    Steak Sandwich

    • 2 handfuls watercress sprigs
    • 2 x 175g sirloin steaks
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 clove garlic, crushed
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • Salt
    • Freshly ground black pepper
    • 1 small red onion, cut into thick rounds
    • 1 baguette
    • Unsalted butter
    • Smooth Dijon mustard


    1. Preheat an oven-top grill pan over a medium-low heat. Pull away any tough watercress stems and set aside the leaves. Trim the steaks of fat and rub with Worcestershire sauce, garlic and half a tablespoon of olive oil. Season with pepper.
    2. Once the grill pan is hot, add the steaks and grill for 3-4 minutes on one side, before turning and grilling for a further 3-4 minutes on the other side for medium rare. Cook them for a little longer if you prefer.
    3. Lightly oil the onion rounds with the remaining oil. Season to taste. Once the steaks are cooked to your satisfaction, remove to a plate and add the onion rounds to the grill pan. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side until golden.
    4. Meanwhile, cut two lengths of baguette to fit the steaks, slice in half lengthwise and butter. Add a cooked steak to each (with any juices), smear with mustard, then top with the grilled onions, and the watercress. Squidge down the lid and cut in half. Serve with potato crisps and gherkins or other pickles.
