Giant Toblerone Cookies

Sometimes we shouldn’t have to choose between a biscuit and a chocolate bar – this recipe allows you to have your outsize, gooey cookie and eat it.

Preparation time : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes to 17 minutes
Total time : 25 minutes to 27 minutes

Makes: 6

Ingredients

55g butter, softened
120g light soft brown sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tsp vanilla extract
140g plain flour
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
½ tsp salt
200g dark Toblerone, roughly chopped

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4 and line two large baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment. Cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth, then stir in the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and 150g Toblerone.
  2. Drop 3 generously heaped tablespoons of dough onto each prepared baking sheet, leaving at least 7cm space between each to allow for spreading. Sprinkle the remaining chopped Toblerone over the surface of the cookies. Bake for 15–17 minutes, until dry-looking and covered with even cracks but not quite firm to the touch. Leave to cool and firm up on the baking sheets for a few minutes before carefully peeling away from the paper. The cookies will keep in an airtight tin for up to 3 days.

Drinks recommendation

A gentle, American-style coffee served in generous portions may assuage the guilt.

Great recipe. Very quick and easy to make - though I only used about 120g of toblerone and I made 12 biscuits rather than six huge ones.

The children love them.

Absolute fantastic recipe; a real treat and one guaranteed to impress, particularly due to their size! My tip is to buy a box of mixed mini toblerones and cut a few of those up instead. That way, you can have a mixture of milk, dark & white chocolate toblerone cookies. And make double the amount, because they'll be snapped up in an instant!

Really disappointed with this recipe (unusually for a Waitrose recipe)! And I see I'm at odds with the other rave reviews. Sure I followed the recipe correctly, but think milk chocolate toblerone would be much better (as one of the reviewers used). Although I'm normally a fan of plain chocolate I think these cookies weren't sweet enough, although my husband, with his really sweet tooth, liked them better than I did. Wouldn't make them again though.

These cookies are amazing - and huge!! Very easy to make and a hit with everyone... I just need to double the recipe to make more!

Scandalously easy to make and a sure-fire way of losing your friends. There are six of us in the office and it seemed such a simple gesture: make a batch of Giant Toblerone Cookies for Tuesday's coffee break but wait for the oohs and ahhs before revealing the calorie count.

Then, as they cooled, the evil one crept up and said, "All that effort and no reward? Not even a nibble ...?" That was it. I ate one and sank into cookie dreamland. As I was downing the last guilty mouthful Jane appeared and offered to try one, just to be sure.

This recipe is heaven on a plate. Needless to say the entire batch never made it to the office and their journey through our pinball gullets, hitting button after button as they headed to their high-scoring sensation goal and the promise of a replay was one that will linger with both of us for a long time.

I varied by using the normal Toblerone instead of the dark. This of course gives me every reason to try the recipe one more time. I omitted the salt because I used salted butter and I forgot to add the final 50g of Toblerone to the final mix before they headed off to the oven. Okay, I added them to the mix by mistake, all right?

Five out of five for the recipe and ten out of ten for my dietary promises as they hit the wall in a shower of chocolate.
