Originating from Northern Thailand, Sticky Rice (or glutinous rice) is whiter and shorter than other rice. This opaque grain becomes translucent when cooked and is best prepared by soaking prior to cooking. Traditionally sticky rice is served in individual lidded baskets made from either reed or bamboo (kra-tip khao). Forget table manners, sticky rice is best moulded and eaten with fingers! Sticky Rice is served as an accompaniment to savoury dishes; it is also very often cooked with coconut milk and a wide variety of fruits, to create sweet snacks or delicious desserts.
Preparation & Storage
- Serve hot or cold.
Store in cool dry place. Once opened, use within 6 months.
