Coming up roses

Take a bunch of beautiful Fairtrade roses, water, a tea cup and saucer, and an old coffee pot or two, and you can have a simple, elegant flower arrangement, without the need for any florist’s foam or wire.

Choose which colour roses you want to combine, then trim them to length, cutting the stems diagonally with a sharp knife, so the blooms just spill over the top of your containers. Fill with water, add flower food, then arrange your roses. Group several containers together for impact.

For a quirky touch, use favourite crocks from the cupboard rather than vases. Use flower-filled teacups as pretty place settings or as the perfect finishing touch for a birthday breakfast tray.

  1. Place water in a tea cup, cut down the stems of a few roses and arrange the blooms in the cup with ivy sprigs from the garden.
  2. Finish by adding a hand-made swing tag, which can say ‘Happy birthday’ or a guest’s name, if using as a place setting.
