Coffee-marinated steak

You may have heard of tea-smoked chicken or ham cooked in cola, but we love coffee-marinated meat. The coffee imparts a deeply savoury, earthy flavour that complements beef (or pork) beautifully. Sounds eccentric, but tastes incredible. 

  • Preparation time: 5 minutes, plus marinating
  • Cooking time: 5 minutes
  • Total time: 10 minutes, plus marinating

Serves: 2


2 rib-eye or sirloin steaks (2cm thick)
1⁄2 tbsp olive oil

For the coffee marinade:

1 tbsp soy sauce
100ml espresso, cooled
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tbsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp light brown soft sugar 


1. Mix the marinade ingredients in a large resealable freezer bag. Add the steaks; leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 1 hour.

2. When you’re ready to cook the steaks, put a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Remove the steaks from the marinade and pat dry well on kitchen paper. Brush lightly with oil, season well and fry for
2-3 minutes on each side for medium-rare (or until cooked to your liking). Rest for 5 minutes under a loose sheet of foil, before slicing to serve.
