Preparation and Usage

Scottish Oatcakes 100g (4 oz) Hamlyns Scottish Oatmeal 1g (1/4 tsp) Baking Powder 1g (1/4 tsp) Salt 15g (1/2 oz) Butter 75ml (3 tbsp) Water, approximately Mix ingredients. Heat the butter and water in a saucepan. Add to dry ingredients and mix to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 7 inch circle on a surface dusted with oatmeal. Cut into triangles. Cook in a greased heavy frying pan or griddle for approximately 5 mins each side until crisp and starting to brown.

Porridge can be prepared by the traditional method or, alternatively, can be cooked in the microwave. All cooking appliances vary in performance, the following are guidelines.1 Serving 1/2 cup Scottish Oatmeal to 2 - 2 1/2 water.2 Serving 1 cup Scottish Oatmeal to 3 - 4 cups water.


To microwave in a 650W oven, place oatmeal in a deep, non-metallic bowl. Add water, or milk and water and stir. Cook for 4 minutes on full power. Remove from microwave and stir briskly. Cook for a further 3 minutes.Add salt or sugar to taste, stir and serve.


Place the oatmeal in a saucepan. Add water, or for an extra creamy porridge add part milk, part water. Bring to the boil continuously. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt or sugar to taste.For a smoother texture soak the ingredients overnight, bring to the boil and simmer for 4 minutes.
