Waitrose & Partners and Ocado: what is the relationship and what is going on?
You may have heard earlier this year that the agreement between Waitrose & Partners and Ocado is ending in August 2020, which means from 1 September 2020 onwards the only place customers can buy Waitrose & Partners products online is from waitrose.com.
The agreement with Ocado has been a great arrangement but after almost 20 years both parties are ready to go their own way. Naturally, this means a few changes to the way some customers might shop for Waitrose & Partners products and we want to share those with you. Here’s a little more information...
Frequently asked questions
I thought Waitrose & Partners and Ocado were the same thing. What’s the difference?
Waitrose & Partners is part of the John Lewis Partnership and its customers can shop online at waitrose.com or in one of its conveniently located shops around the UK. Everyone who works for Waitrose & Partners and waitrose.com co-owns the business and are known as Partners.
Ocado is an online retailer (with no physical stores) that buys groceries from Waitrose & Partners and other companies, which it then delivers to its customers from warehouses.
The tie-up between the two began formally in January 2002 when Waitrose & Partners started its own delivery service but, due to its relatively small size at that time, it wanted the help of an established network to do so. Ocado.com, as well as waitrose.com, has been delivering Waitrose & Partners own-brand products throughout the UK ever since.
Waitrose.com has grown and flourished – it now reaches 80% of UK postcodes, offering free delivery for orders over £60 and popular one-hour delivery slots.
When does the agreement between Waitrose & Partners and Ocado end?
The agreement ends on 31 August 2020. This means that from 1 September 2020 the only place that customers can buy Waitrose & Partners own-label products is in one of the stores or from waitrose.com.
As always though, customers can continue to buy Waitrose & Partners products – including the very best British meat, responsibly sourced fish and its innovative vegan range – in store or online at waitrose.com.
I buy Waitrose & Partners products on ocado.com. What do I need to do?
Waitrose & Partners products – and hundreds of other brands – are available to shop at waitrose.com. If you’re new to shopping with us, we’d love to welcome you properly, help you get set up and explain our fulfillment options (including free delivery when you spend £60 online, or click and collect). Find out more.
We also have a free Waitrose & Partners mobile app where it’s really easy to book a delivery or amend your shopping list on the go.
I don’t shop on ocado.com, do I need to do anything?
Nothing at all. Customers can continue shopping with us in Waitrose & Partners stores and online at waitrose.com.
Why should I shop with Waitrose & Partners?
From 1 September 2020 the only place that customers will be able to buy Waitrose & Partners own-label products is by shopping in a Waitrose & Partners store or at waitrose.com. We also sell hundreds of other brands and customers can amend online orders up until 11pm the night before delivery.
What’s changing on waitrose.com?
We want you, existing and new customers, to enjoy shopping with Waitrose & Partners and are continually looking for ways to improve waitrose.com and the Waitrose & Partners shopping app, particularly in terms of website speed, searching for products, making checkout easier, putting more delivery drivers on the road and expanding the number of places we can deliver to.
In addition, if you regularly shop at John Lewis & Partners and need to return small items, you can do this via your waitrose.com delivery driver. Find out more.
