Fans of BBC TV’s The Great British Menu will recognise Chris Harrod. His innovative take on tea and cake – a nettle and honey sponge topped with woodruff mousse, and paired with a quince green tea – won the dessert course in last year’s riveting contest.

Chris and his wife Kirsty own The Whitebrook, near Monmouth, in the beautiful Wye Valley. Its guest suites are a stylish adjunct to the smartly linened dining rooms, where locally sourced food is paired with freshly foraged herbs and plants to evoke a sense of the surrounding valley. Dishes include Cornish plaice, heritage carrots, buttermilk and estuary findings.

The restaurant features as one of the Top 50 destinations in The Good Food Guide 2019 by Waitrose & Partners, which praises its vibrant menu, charming service and a wine list that boasts an “authoritative roll call of younger and forward-thinking growers”.
