We’re taking action on takeaway coffee cups

Here at Waitrose we believe in doing everything we can to protect our environment, and that includes reducing the amount of plastic and packaging we use

That’s why we’ve committed to remove disposable takeaway coffee cups from all our stores by autumn this year.

It’s worth the effort. Making this change will prevent 52 million takeaway cups a year going
to landfill.

We’ve already made good progress and so in the coming weeks, takeaway cups will be gradually removed from our remaining shops (excluding Little Waitrose at Shell).

We are still delighted to offer you a free hot drink whenever you shop with us. All we ask is that
you bring in your own reusable cup and swipe your myWaitrose card at the checkout, each
time you visit.

What is happening?

Back in April we made the commitment to remove all disposable takeaway coffee cups from our shops by autumn 2018.

We’ve already made good progress and removed disposable takeaway cups from 18 stores. And so in the coming weeks, takeaway cups will be gradually removed from a large proportion of our remaining shops (excluding little Waitrose at Shell).

As a myWaitrose member you will still have the option to enjoy a free tea or coffee from the self-serve machine in your local store. All that we ask is that you bring in your own reusable cup, as disposable coffee cups will no longer be provided at the checkout.

Why is this happening?

We believe in doing everything we can to protect our environment and that includes reducing the amount of plastic and packaging we use.

It’s worth the effort. Making this change will prevent the use of 52 million takeaway cups a year, which  is a saving of 221 tonnes of plastic and more than 665 tonnes of paper a year.

Why now?

Our current takeaway cups are recyclable but the facilities to collect them are limited. We have already moved to a cup that used 25% less material as well as trying to find a coffee cup that could be recycled in mainstream facilities. Recently, however, we concluded this was not an option in the near future. We believe removing all disposable cups is the right thing for us to do now.

We have been, and remain committed to, industry efforts to increase the recycling of takeaway cups led by the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group (PCRRG) and the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK).

Why haven’t you introduced compostable or recyclable
cups instead?

We looked at compostable cups carefully and there are currently only a small number of sites in the UK able to process industrially compostable coffee cups (they're not home compostable). The need for all the cups to be transported across the country to these sites means we don’t think it’s currently an environmentally sustainable solution.

The cups plant-based coating and lid means if they are placed in normal recycling they would act as a contaminant. We therefore believe that removing takeaway coffee cups all together is a more effective for the environment.

Are you removing takeaway cups from your Welcome Break and Shell stores, or from Leckford, the Waitrose farm?

Takeaway coffee cups have already been removed the Longstock Farm Shop and Café
at Leckford.

We also plan to remove takeaway cups from our Little Waitrose at Shell stores and have already done so from our Little Waitrose at Shell Bagshot Road.

This does not apply to our 27 Welcome Break stores because of their franchise with a
coffee provider.

Can I buy a tea or coffee in the café to takeaway in a reusable cup?

Yes, paid-for hot drinks can be served into your own reusable cup.

What size reusable cup fits under the self-serve tea and
coffee machines?

Our self-service machines take regular-sized reusable cups that have a removable lid. The maximum height of the cup is 18cm (7 in) and they take 320ml (11 fl oz) of liquid. Please take care not to overfill your cup and when putting the lid back on.
