These juicy late-summer berries are members of the rose family, which would explain the thorns found in abundance on the hardy, wild plants. Modern, cultivated varieties typically have far fewer thorns and boast plump, sweet fruit. The many tiny seeds contained in each buxom berry make them an excellent
source of fibre while the purple-black juice is rich in vitamin C. Blackberries pair famously well with apples - a happy seasonal accident, perhaps - but they are also enhanced by almonds and other nuts, cinnamon, elderflower and toffee-flavoured sugars such as muscovado.
