Total time:
1 hour 45 minutes
Ingredients
-
250g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
-
250g soft light brown sugar
-
2 large eggs
-
200ml milk
-
500g self-raising flour
-
Pinch of ground cloves
-
1kg cooking apples, such as Bramley, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4 and butter a baking dish measuring roughly 30 x 30cm.
-
Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat until combined. Mix in the milk, then fold in the flour and cloves. Fold in the apples.
-
Tip into the dish. Spread the mixture out but leave the surface quite uneven. Bake for 1¼ hours or until a skewer comes out clean. Cover with baking parchment if it starts to brown too much. Serve hot with cream and extra sugar.
