    Croque Monsieur

    This is a slightly more robust version of the classic toasted cheese and ham sandwich that is so popular in France. Use cheddar cheese for a more economical sandwich and add pickle or French mustard to taste. You could also use Waitrose Stoneground Organic Flour Wholemeal Bread instead of white.

    Serves: 4


    • 100g Yeo Valley Organic Butter, softened
    • 8 slices Waitrose Organic Flour White Bread
    • 3-4 slices of hand-carved Organic Honey Roast Ham
    • 175g Gruyère cheese, thinly sliced


    1. Lightly butter the slices of bread on both sides. Trim the ham slices to fit the bread and arrange the ham on four of the bread slices. Arrange the cheese over the ham. Cover with the remaining slices of bread and press down firmly.
    2. Heat a large, heavy based frying pan and gently fry the sandwiches for about 4-5 minutes on each side, pressing down with a fish slice occasionally until golden brown on both sides and the cheese has melted.
    3. Serve immediately.
