Fairtrade coffee

Waitrose is proud to sell coffees bearing the Fairtrade Mark - meaning they are independently guaranteed to meet internationally recognised fair trade standards.

You can be sure the producers and workers are getting a fair deal - and they taste great too!

Peru Decaff Organic Fairtrade coffee

A medium bodied coffee with a satisfying aroma, this coffee is full in flavour and low in caffeine

The high-altitude microclimates of the tropical valleys of the Andes yield Arabica beans with good acidity, round body and superb flavour. Local smallholders have united in an impressive coffee cooperative program, which raises standards and invests in their community to build schools and clinics. Waitrose imports this special coffee under a Fair Trade agreement with the COCLA cooperative.

Sumatra Mandheling Organic Fairtrade R&G coffee

Wild, exotic and spicy with an intense rich flavour

Grown on small plots in Takengon in northwest Sumatra at an altitude of more than 3,600 feet, Sumatra Mandheling coffee uses a semi-washed process for an earthy yet clean taste with full body and low acidity. The Organic-certified coffee estates were affected by the tsunami of 2004 and farmers have diligently rebuilt their plantations. The rewarding working environment and long-term investment in the local community has resulted in high standards and a coffee of exceptional quality.

We import this special coffee under a Fair Trade agreement. The provenance of this exceptional coffee is unique to Waitrose.

Brazilian Daterra (Certified by the Rainforest Alliance & Utz Kapeh)

Mellow, nutty & well balanced with an intense aroma and smooth flavour with fruity undertones

This high quality, award-winning coffee is grown in eastern Brazil where the high altitude, stable temperature and reliable rains are perfect for sustainable coffee farming. Many estates are returning to traditional agricultural practice, preserving wildlife and the environment and promoting labour rights. Their ethical approach has already gained international recognition.

The Deterra Estate is located in Minas Gerais, Brazil and over a third of the farm's 16,418 acres of cerrado - a mix of shrubs, savanna and scattered trees - is protected. The cerrado is Brazil's second largest ecosystem after the Amazon Rainforest. Only 1.5% of the Brazilian cerrado is protected which means its survival relies on independent conservation efforts like the Daterra Estates in order to survive.

Zambian Munali (Certified by Utz Kapeh)

A refreshing, clean medium bodied coffee with a delicate aroma and slightly sweet flavour

Grown at the border of the Munali Pass, this coffee is well deserving of its Utz Kapeh certification and international recognition. The combination of fertile soils, plentiful water from the nearby dam and selective picking and wet processing all done by hand, ensures a very high quality coffee. The Lublinkhof family estate has been growing coffee since 1999 and employs workers from four neighbouring villages, allowing the selective picking so rare elsewhere. A rare and exceptional coffee, Zambian Munali is exclusive in the UK to Waitrose, and is best drunk with milk.
