A quick guide to Halloween pumpkins

Carved pumpkins make bewitching decorations and are a fun (supervised!) activity for kids.

Know your pumpkins: Look for medium or large carving pumpkins for your jack-o’-lantern. For supper, choose smaller, culinary varieties.
Gutted: Use an ice-cream scoop to scrape out the insides, leaving a one-inch thick wall. Smooth interiors make for better light reflection.
Get the kit: You’ll need a long, serrated knife to cut through the thick flesh.
Clever carving: Don’t fancy freestyling? Create a paper template and stencil on with a pen.
