------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Why are you recalling the product?

During a production run, a number of cartons of semi-skimmed milk were accidentally tainted with a very dilute cleaning solution. As a precaution we have taken the decision to withdraw the whole production batch.

2) How does this affect the milk?

A small number of customers have reported an unpleasant odour and taste.

3) What products are affected?

Only the following product is being recalled as a result of this issue:

essential Waitrose

semi-skimmed

1.7% fat milk

1.136 litre (2 pint)

Display Until 01 Nov

Use By 02 Nov

No other date codes or products are affected.

4) How did you know there was something wrong?

A small number of our customers reported an unpleasant smell. We immediately investigated and our supplier established that part of a production run had been accidentally tainted with a very dilute cleaning solution.

5) How many cartons of milk have been affected?

From our investigations we have established that only part of the production run was affected during a short time period. We estimate that a maximum of 2,000 cartons of milk could be affected. As a precaution, we are withdrawing the entire production run.

6) How could this have happened?

This happened because of a faulty valve. We are currently conducting a full investigation, however, our supplier is not filling any more bottles of milk on this production line.

7) Which other products are made at this factory or on this production line?

No other products or date codes have been affected in this way as we have identified the production line responsible and have immediately stopped production on it.

8) What should I do if I have drunk some of this milk?

The levels we have found so far in the product should not cause harm . However we are carrying out the recall as a precaution . If customers have consumed this line and feel unwell we advise customers consult their Doctor or NHS Direct.

9) Will Waitrose shops be running out of milk?

No. It only affects this one line and there are sufficient stock levels in the system.
