It all starts with long-term relationships with our farmers and suppliers, and continues with our beliefs in championing British produce, supporting responsible sourcing, treating people fairly and treading lightly on the environment. This is the Waitrose Way.
But it doesn’t stop there. With your help in branch and online, our Community Matters scheme has donated £14 million to local charities chosen by you. The Waitrose Foundation is a partnership we created in 2005 to help improve the lives of the farm workers and smallholders who grow our produce in South Africa, Kenya and Ghana. The Waitrose Foundation is just one example of how we work in partnership with our suppliers to build sustainable relationships, helping our customers get the best possible food and drink.

Fair-trading schemes involves businesses working with suppliers who treat their workers well and pay decent wages. This ensures that communities in poor countries can use profits to invest in their future.

By placing a token in the Community Matters box at your local branch you’re helping your community. Since its launch in 2008, the scheme has donated £14 million to local charities chosen by you.
Online, Waitrose.com also shares a donation of £25,000 between 3 national causes. By voting for one of our national causes after checkout, each cause will receive a share according to the number of votes - just as we do in our branches.
Instead of funding through a price premium, Waitrose, in conjunction with growers, importers and exporters, passes a percentage of profits into a trust to pay for projects.
These include educational, social and healthcare projects, and are chosen by farm workers and smallholder committees. Money raised by the sale of Waitrose Foundation produce is therefore spent on projects that are chosen by, and directly benefit, the farm workers and smallholders.
