Dark, delicious rum

Rum

Made from distilling molasses, which is a by-product of sugar production, the majority of the rum produced today is made in the West Indies. The best grades of rum are made from sugar cane that is grown specifically for distillation. There are two main types of rum: white rum which is bottled immediately after production and dark rum which is cask-aged before it is bottled.

Rum is popular in cookery, neat with ice as an alternative to whisky or Cognac or as an ingredient in a variety of cocktails, often combined with fruit. Pina Colada (white rum, pineapple and cream) and Planter's Punch (white rum, orange and lemon juice) are two of the most well known rum-based cocktails. It is also a popular short drink when mixed with cola. Waitrose sell a variety of rums, white rums to choose from include Waitrose White Rum and Bacardi.
