Blueberries

Blueberries

These medium-sized, smooth dark blue berries are traditionally associated with America but are also increasingly popular in Britain. They have a sweet yet refreshing tangy flavour. Frozen blueberries are available as part of a frozen mixed summer fruits selection, also containing strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries and redcurrants. Available from May to September.

Uses: Blueberries hold their shape during cooking so are excellent in pies, cakes and muffins. They are also popular in ice creams and can be made into jam or jelly. Use frozen mixed fruits to make sorbets, fools, sauces and mousses.

To store: Keep in the container they were bought in and store in the fridge for 2-3 days.

To cook: To stew blueberries add a little water and 50g sugar per 450g of fruit, simmer gently until just tender.
