Boil

To cook in a liquid at a temperature of 100°C.

Bring to the boil

To heat water in a pan, with or without other ingredients (such as vegetables or pasta) until it reaches 100°C.

Boil gently

Where the surface of a liquid boiling in a pan is just moving and small bubbles occasionally appear on the surface, eg bring the water to a gentle boil and add the eggs.
