WELCOME TO JULY…
British summer is a game of two halves. The first is the dreamy kind of situation you see on the cover – dappled sunlight, picnics in the park, trousers rolled up for paddling – all to a soundtrack of tinkling ice-cream vans and children laughing in the street.
The other half is those days (OK, weeks; sometimes entire months) when the need to wrap up warmly and take an umbrella, just in case, can be every bit as pressing a reality.
So it’s just as well we’re a nation well-adapted to such vagaries, and we understand that summer is as much a state of mind as a sunny day. Blessed with clear skies? Take your supper outside – light the BBQ midweek (page 41), have ice cream for pudding on principle (page 61), then make your next free day a mini-holiday (page 74).
Jacket weather? Mix a cocktail (page 90), take that summer read indoors and do something clever with any seasonal gluts – those courgettes and raspberries won’t eat themselves.
