WELCOME TO MAY…
There's a lot of science out there about the positive impact of seizing those small moments of everyday joy. Broadly speaking, the argument runs that life is complicated but by homing in on simple, modest pleasures, we can tangibly affect our happiness levels. Readers, if ever there was a month designed specifically for this, it is right now – because May is when spring really starts to give. All hail asparagus, that hyper-seasonal luxury which seems worthy of a mini-celebration in and of itself. Jersey Royals are also here in all their flash-in-a-hot-pan glory – just add lashings of butter. Not to mention all the other treats peaking right now: radishes, fresh peas, watercress and a burst of fragrant soft herbs. Not only are these bang in season, they’re all grown on British soil – which means better taste (see page 51), better nutrition (see page 114) and a better deal for the land that feeds us. I’m off to celebrate – I hope you’ll join me.
