WELCOME TO OCTOBER…

Autumn seems to me when the nation really hits its cooking sweet spot. Much as we lean into summer salads and weekend BBQs, the vagaries of the weather mean we’ve never quite equalled the skills of our continental cousins, for whom Med eating, aperitivo hour and tapas are art forms honed over generations. Winter comes with the excitement (and stresses) of Christmas and spring with those thrilling first green shoots and leaves, but it’s autumn when we all join in a collective sigh of relief that the jumpers can come out again. Soups, stews and slowcooking are back on the menu and we can hunker down in the pub with the happy prospect of a roast ahead of us. Star food writer Ixta Belfrage is here to lead the way with a Brazilian menu (page 41) worth a happy afternoon in the kitchen. And we have autumnal soups and toasties the right side of excessively cheesy, plus recipes making the most of nuts – surely one of life’s greatest gifts to food lovers. Photographer Ella.
