Wine of Tokaji, Hungary. Tokaji Aszú6 Puttonyos - White Hungarian Wine. Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat de Lunel varieties are planted at a density of around 6,000 vines/ha and were hand harvested in late October. The 2007 season began mild and dry in Tokaji, continuing warm and sunny until the end of June when the heavens opened. Most of the summer was hot and dry however and lack of rain in August in particular was a problem. But a classic humid Tokaji autumn was to follow, alternating wet and dry days with a fair drying wind, perfect conditions for botrytis. We harvested reasonable quantities of high quality Aszu berries, overall a superb vintage. The wine was aged for over 2.5 years in old Hungarian (Zemplen Mountain) oak and was bottled on 7 July 2010, then aged for a further 27 months before release. Just 2,390 50cl bottles were produced. The world's finest wines capture the essence of the vineyards in which their grapes are grown. Five wines from five ancient vineyards first formally classified over 300 years ago. Each has its own personality; together they form the Royal Tokaji Single Vineyard AszúCollection. Royal Tokaji was founded in 1990 by Hugh Johnson together with a small group of investors and local small growers, thus becoming the first foreign company ever to invest in the region and providing the catalyst for the renaissance of post-communist Tokaji. It now owns 107 ha of prime vineyards around Mad and Tarcal, 85ha of which are in production with a further 10 ha currently being re-planted. There are significant holdings in the 1st Growth vineyards of Szt Tamas (12ha), Nyulaszo (18ha), and Betsek (16ha), and together with Hugh Johnson, Royal Tokaji owns 11 of the 18ha that comprise Mezes Maly, one of the two Great First Growths of Tokaji. A new euro 3.25m winery was opened in 2010. The Betsek vineyard faces south-east and is located at the bottom of a valley near the village of Mad. It is comparatively cool, prone to spring frosts, and has a black volcanic topsoil over rich clay.
