- plain flour, for dusting
- 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped out
- 75g golden caster sugar
- 40g unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp calvados, cider brandy or cold water
- 8 cox apples (about 1.2kg), peeled, cored and quartered
