Portugal's native Trincadeira grape is notoriously difficult to grow and even more challenging to harvest. The variety is very susceptible to rot and, even when the growing season is kind, knowing when to harvest is key as they only reach perfect ripeness for a few short days: pick too early and they're tart with little flavour, pick too late and they're overripe and lacking acidity. ……However, one taste of this gloriously bold and fruity wine shows why the effort of growing and harvesting them is so worthwhile. Its core of red and black fruits leads to rich, spicy notes and polished tannins which work perfectly with roast pork and crackling.
