The World Cup kicks off this week, commencing 39 days of 104 matches – that’s a lot of viewing snacks. Luckily, we’ve got all the football-friendly bites you need.
Have your burger and dunk it too
A humble can of soup transforms your regular patty into this savvy take on the French dip burger (itself a twist on the French dip sandwich). Filled with oozing cheese and bourbon onions, plus a tub of dipping sauce alongside, this one needs napkins.
DINNER TONIGHT
Crowd-pleaser
Crisped-up tortilla pieces are slathered with smoky, saucy chicken, zingy lime pickled onions and creamy feta to make these crunchy tostadas – a perfect midnight snack for the World Cup which screens at all hours of the night.
SIP OF THE WEEK
Go for gold
What’s a football viewing party without cracking open a cold one? Bristol-brewed Wiper and True is the beer for the job. A hazy, tropical IPA, its golden orange hue will help keep spirits high, whatever the score.

Things we're buying this week
Food editor Katie Bishop shares what’s going in her shopping basket this week.
No.1 Black Garlic Chorizo with Wildflower Honey
“Smoky, plump, ready-to-cook mini sausages from Spain. Infused with mellow black garlic and sweet honey, they’re perfect for tapas and picnics.”
Bonne Maman Raspberry Yoghurt
“Made with whole milk, this family-favourite is indulgently creamy on top, with a layer of tangy, ruby-red raspberry compote underneath. The rhubarb variety is also delicious.”
Essential MSC Tuna Chunks in Spring Water
“This is in my shopping basket week in, week out. So versatile and, most importantly, sustainably sourced – the tuna is caught using a dolphin-friendly method that minimises the impact on other marine life.”
ManiLife Deep Roast Crunchy Peanut Butter
“Trust me: try this once and you won’t go back. Use in Asian-style dressings, stir-fries and sauces, as a dippy-snack with apple slices, or just straight from the tub with a big spoon.”
IN MY BASKET
Wasabi is Tim Anderson’s favourite way to wake up his home cooking
The chef, writer and MasterChef champion uses wasabi in all the places you’d usually have horseradish – and even drinks it. Try it in his Bloody Mary with Japanese flavours.
“I rarely make sushi at home, but even so I am never without a trusty tube of wasabi. Of course it’s great with sushi or sashimi, but it also works well wherever you’d use ordinary horseradish. Back when I was first getting into Japanese food in the late 90s, wasabi was having a big moment. But I still love it – it has so many ways of waking up your home cooking.”
