What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is a global movement, which aims to secure better prices, safe working conditions, environmental protection and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. We’ve supported Fairtrade since 1994, and today offer many Fairtrade products. Since 2020, all our own-label tea, coffee and sugar products, and the cocoa used in confectionery, have been 100% Fairtrade.
Fairtrade tea
All our own-label tea is 100% Fairtrade, generating Fairtrade Premiums to support farmers like Eusephia Werimba Nyaga from Kenya. Together with fellow farmers, Eusephia decided to invest in beehives, which have boosted their wages and provided an independent income.

Fairtrade coffee
César Julio Díaz Lasso is the general manager of Cooperativa de Caficultores de Aguadas in Colombia, which supplies Waitrose with Fairtrade coffee. The Fairtrade Premium has been invested in health, education and productivity projects.

Fairtrade chocolate
Cocoa farmer Egny Lea works at the Coobadi cooperative in Côte d'Ivoire that supplies Waitrose with cocoa for its own-label chocolate. “Fairtrade has changed my life because I am able to earn a lot”, she says. “The Premium has helped me with my children – it brings a lot of good.”

Sounds bananas, but these bananas help build schools
That's because every banana – in addition to being Fairtrade since 2010 – is now a Waitrose Foundation banana too.
