Homemade decor ideas

When it comes to DIY decorations, think outside the paper chain box. Bring the joy of Christmas into your home with handcrafted designs that are not only simple and easy to make, but are a fun way to get the little ones involved. With pretty felt bags filled with goodies to hang on your tree, dangling pine cones to adorn lifeless windows and personalised place settings to complement your festive feast, it’s time to get creative and let your artistic spirit flourish.

Christmas cones

Using a piece of good quality 3mm-thick felt, draw a circle around a large plate, 27cm in diameter. Divide the circle into four quarters and cut them out. To make four cones, sew together the two straight sides of each quarter. Make handles using leftover strips of felt and stitch into place. Decorate with ribbon and lace.

Table centrepiece

Fill an old jar with your favourite Christmas baubles, then place in the centre of a simple festive wreath.

Pine cones

Collect pine cones and carefully tap a nail into the bottom of each one. Paint or decorate with snow spray and hang in your window from different lengths of ribbon.

Place setting

Fold the napkins and tie with ribbon. Now take a piece of good quality felt, 3mm thick, and cut out a set of simple Christmas shapes, such as a tree. Cut a small hole in each and use these to tie on parcel labels, inscribed with the names of guests. Place on top of napkins.

Table runner

Use a length of plain craft paper for a table runner and decorate with shapes of leaves or snowflakes by spraying snow spray through a stencil.

Sugar cubes

Use writing icing tubes to spell out festive messages on sugar cubes
