Also known as a tree tomato, the tamarillo is shaped like a large plum and has smooth skin ranging from yellow-orange to bright red. Cutting it in half reveals dramatic blood red juice and two symmetrical lines of black seeds, which can be eaten. The fruit has a sharp taste and is best eaten with sugar. The thin skin, which is tough and bitter, should not be eaten. The tamarillo is rich in vitamin C.
Uses: Tamarillos can be used in the same way as tomatoes and made into chutneys or sauces.
To store: Keep in the fridge for 1 week.
To prepare: Cut in half and sprinkle the flesh with sugar before eating straight from the skin.
