Ian Haste has been cooking for nearly 30 years. Over this time, he has realised that if more of us returned to a carefully planned weekly shop, this would not only save people wasting their time and money, but it would also tackle the problem of food waste and increase variety in our diets.
‘I hate wasting food – you learn not to as a chef’ says Ian, who started out washing dishes at a Norfolk gastro pub before moving up the ranks to be its head chef. Today, his YouTube cooking channel, Haste’s Kitchen, has more than 90,000 followers.
His new book, The 7-Day Basket, is divided into 10 baskets, each containing seven recipes, plus a list of ingredients required. There’s also a list of store cupboard basics you’ll need to have already.
Once you’ve bought the list of ingredients for that week, your evening meals will be sorted with no need to nip out to get extras. The book is a reminder of the benefits of putting in time to plan meals carefully before you shop rather than being left with half-used ingredients by the end of week, not to mention a sky-high groceries bill.
‘The aim is to get everyone in the kitchen preparing food even if they’ve not had much experience’.
