Diwali recipes
“As the days grow shorter, Diwali beams light, joy and feasting into our homes,” says food writer Mallika Basu. “This festival of lights is celebrated not only by Hindus but also by Jains, Sikhs and other faith communities worldwide. It’s a time for family, friends and food – from savoury snacks to sweet treats scented with saffron and cardamom. In my family, we gather around a vegetarian feast on a festive tablescape, in sparkling outfits with dancing and garden fireworks. Non-vegetarian dishes, card-playing and late-night soirées also feature in some communities and families. Diwali is, above all, about hope, abundance and togetherness. What better moment to celebrate spices in everyday cooking or to host a cosy autumnal feast?”
