Wontons

These are small traditional Chinese 'moneybag' shaped parcels of minced meat, fish or vegetables combined with herbs and spices wrapped in thin pastry-like skins. They are cooked either by deep frying or steaming. Wontons can be bought ready made or you can make them using wonton skins - small squares (approximately 8cm) of thin dough made from egg and flour. Sweet fillings can be use to fill wonton skins but these are not as popular as the savoury variety.

Uses: Often served as an appetiser with a sweet and sour dipping sauce - they have a crispy, dry texture and go well with pre-dinner drinks. Wontons are also served in soups.
